Webinar recording: Green claims under scrutiny: What the EU’s Directive on “Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition” means for businesses

We held a webinar on 9 June 2026 on the EU’s Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (EmpCo / ECGT), which significantly tightens the rules around environmental claims, the use of broad or generic “green” statements, and product durability information.

Kathrin Bauwens, Iyesogie Igiehon and Jessica Radke discussed what the Directive does, how it fits alongside wider EU and UK action on greenwashing, and where businesses are most likely to feel the impact in practice, from marketing and labelling to customer communications and litigation risk.

Key takeaways from the session:

  • The new rules introduced by EmpCo will intensify an already demanding regulatory environment. Claims need to be considered on a case-by-case basis with context and audience front of mind.
  • Underestimating the impact of recent developments can carry material consequences including financial penalties, operational costs, reputational damage and private litigation.
  • Robust governance and internal controls are key. Companies need to build and maintain coherent cross-jurisdictional approaches which consistently apply core principles and can adapt to different business/service offerings.
