What a difference an election makes!

Just when we thought the ambitious proposals recently put forth in the UK would help define a new Green Revolution, the US election of Joe Biden has encouraged some of the UK's leading energy companies to call out the UK government for not being ambitious enough! It remains to be seen whether a Biden administration will be able to push through a climate-change regulatory agenda that levels up with the proposals in Europe, let alone takes the lead, but the message is clear that the mere prospect of the US actively engaging in the climate change debate can have a material impact on how the regulatory landscape unfolds in Europe and beyond.

Five of the UK’s biggest energy companies are lobbying Boris Johnson to match US president-elect Joe Biden’s clean energy ambitions and set a deadline to slash emissions from Britain’s power system to net zero... following Mr Biden’s pledge during the US election campaign to decarbonise his country’s electricity system by 2035.
